Stop imprisoning women who miscarry!

Healthcare
Target: State legislators and law enforcement officials
In over half the country, it’s actually legal for prosecutors to charge women who miscarry with manslaughter in certain conditions. In late 2021, Brittney Poolaw, a 21-year-old member of the Comanche Nation in Oklahoma, was charged and convicted after miscarrying her four-month-old pregnancy. Poolaw admitted to using drugs when she sought treatment at a local hospital for her miscarriage and was later sentenced to four years in a state prison. National Advocates of Pregnant Women (NAPW) recorded at least 1,200 cases like Poolaw’s that have occurred in the last 15 years, including women who simply fell down or opted for a home birth that then resulted in miscarriage. Drug use was cited in the majority of cases, and women of color were disproportionately targeted.
Yvette Cabrera at the Center for Public Inequality asserts that prosecutions stemming from increased investigation into loss of pregnancy “overwhelmingly targeted pregnant people who are poor, young, have substance abuse issues, or live in areas with limited health services.” If Roe v. Wade is successfully overturned, the illegitimate assault on women’s reproductive rights will only worsen and criminal charges for miscarriages will ensnare even more at-risk women throughout the country.
Tell states to stop imprisoning women who miscarry!
Attorney Farah Diaz-Tello of the national legal, advocacy, and policy reproductive health organization If/When/How described this injustice as “a vicious cycle where lack of access” and “increased scrutiny and stigma around abortion, as it becomes further restricted or criminalized, leads to more criminalization.” Even in cases of substance abuse, often times addicts lack the adequate community resources to stop using. Pregnancy during addiction should not result in a prison sentence, especially when adequate harm reduction efforts are practically nonexistent.
We should be investing resources in marginalized communities instead of finding new ways to needlessly criminalize them.

Demand the Justice Department stop Oklahoma’s extremist anti-abortion law!

Healthcare
Target: United States Department of Justice
Oklahoma lawmakers took advantage of the extremist momentum threatening to overturn Roe v. Wade by passing the most restrictive abortion law yet. Governor Kevin Stitt made all abortions after fertilization illegal. Despite the leaked draft opinion, Roe v. Wade hasn’t been overturned yet — and yet, Oklahoma is one of the many states who have found a way to go around the courts. Conservatives have no right to ban abortion at conception. That means that next to no one (including victims of sexual assault, incest, at-risk parents, and more) will have input in their reproductive health.
We need everyone in the country fighting for Oklahoma citizens’ right to their own decisions regarding their reproductive health — the passage of this bill only promises to encourage even more radical anti-choice legislation throughout the country.
Add your name to demand the Justice Department stop Oklahoma’s cruel anti-abortion law!
The president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of America, Alex McGill-Johnson, previously said that if the law was passed “Oklahoma [would] be the first state in the country to completely outlaw abortion – even while Roe still stands.” McGill-Johnson went on to say that “what little abortion access is left in the state [would] be gone, and the crisis faced by Oklahoma patients and those that depend on access in the state [would] worsen.”
Roe v. Wade has been the established law of the land for decades. Republicans cannot be allowed to simply rewrite constitutional rights based on their own radical ideologies whenever they feel like it.
Sign your name to call for an immediate stop to Oklahoma’s extremist abortion law!

Arrest the arsonists who torched a Wyoming abortion clinic!

Healthcare
Target: United States Department of Justice
An abortion clinic under construction in Wyoming caught fire in late May, just as it was set to open the following month. The building, severely damaged, is a huge setback in the fight to preserve abortion rights in Republican-controlled states — especially considering that Wyoming is one of 13 states with a trigger law that would instantly outlaw abortion in the event Roe v. Wade is overturned.
Police reported on Facebook that a bystander saw “someone running from the building with what appeared to be a gas can and a black bag.” All hands need to be on deck reviewing security footage and tracking down the suspect — we must ensure this type of violence is prevented and investigated to the fullest extent. The harder progressives fight for the right to choose, the angrier right wing extremists seem to get.
Add your name to demand the Department of Justice immediately investigate the arson of the Wyoming abortion clinic!
In 2009, Abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was shot and killed in a Kansas church. There has long been a precedent set by theocrats for physical (and sometimes fatal) violence if it serves their own interests. These vigilante aggressors do not care that abortion is still a right in all 50 states, they only care to try and put a stop to it by any means necessary.
One of Tiller’s former associates, Burkhart, asserted that “Whether you’re against abortion or support abortion rights, you’re not going to make abortion go away.” The arson of clinics like the one in Wyoming and the death of doctors like Tiller will not make abortion go away. It’s domestic terrorism that would likely be instantly addressed had it not been a clinic. We can not allow this attack on abortion access to go unchecked, something must be done.
Sign your name to call for a prompt and thorough investigation of the clinic that caught fire!

Do you think abortion is a civil right?

Healthcare
As Alveda King said, abortion is a civil right.
Our freedom is on the ballot in November, and there is nothing more alien to freedom than a federal government that seeks control over a woman’s body.
With the Supreme Court turning their back on our civil rights, it’s on US to take action. Let the King family know your thoughts as they plan a campaign to secure abortion as a civil right.

Tell Governor Kevin Stitt to veto the bill that would ban nearly all Oklahoma abortions!

If this bill passes, it only promises to encourage even more radical anti-choice legislation throughout the country.
Should Stitt sign the bill, all abortions services are expected to stop immediately. Oklahoma citizens are at risk of losing their right to choose, regardless of the SCOTUS decision, any day now — this is urgent.

Demand Congress stop Tennessee from banning abortion pills by mail!

Healthcare
Target: Tennessee State Legislature
Not content with the imminent overturning of Roe v. Wade and the subsequent banning of abortion in most of the country, Republicans are racing to close any and all loopholes that might allow a woman to retain some agency over her own body and her own reproductive choices.
In Tennessee, Governor Bill Lee has signed a bill increasing criminal penalties for distributing abortion medication through telehealth services or the mail, making it illegal to distribute abortion medication any way that isn’t a face-to-face meeting with the doctor.
The FDA approved the distribution of abortion pills — which have the full endorsement of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists — during the early days of the pandemic and have been a huge boon to women all across the country.
This latest law is just another effort to humiliate women and to ensure that the only way they can receive abortion healthcare is with the approval of a medical authority figure until Republicans can squash women’s reproductive rights for good.

Thank the heroes who work at abortion clinics and running abortion funds!

Healthcare
In the darkest of times, our solidarity is the strongest weapon we have to resist oppression and despair. When the news of the leaked Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade broke, people all across the country got to straight work to help as many people as they could before it was too late.
Everyone, from the doctors and nurses who work in abortion clinics to the activists hard at work setting up hotlines and emergency funds, to the escorts protecting patients from the rabid fury of anti-choice zealots all deserve our heartfelt thanks.
Sign your name to say THANK YOU to all those helping people get the reproductive help they need!
It’s not easy to do abortion work. Domestic terrorists regularly target reproductive healthcare clinics and the people who work there. Their lives are at risk every day they go to work — and that doesn’t even begin to touch on the harassment, stalking, death threats, and abuse they endure at the hands and phones of the radical right-wing.
But the work they do is beyond critical — and we need to show our thanks!

Demand the Louisiana legislature vote down the barbaric bill to make abortion a homicide!

Healthcare
Target: Louisiana State House
As if their draconian anti-abortion ban wasn’t enough, deranged misogynist Louisiana legislators are doubling down on their war on women and are now considering a bill to make abortion not just a felony but a homicide, with all the severe punishments that accompany it.
The potential impacts of this law are shocking to consider. Women with life-threatening pregnancies would be treated as murderers, facing decades in prison for saving their own lives. Rape victim and incest victims would be forced to make an unimaginably monstrous choice. Even families who produce nonviable embryos for in vitro fertilization could all be charged with murder.
Tell the Louisiana legislature to stop this wildly unreasonable bill that literally criminalizes nonviable pregnancies!
“What this bill does is to specifically amend the crime of homicide and the crime of criminal battery to enable the state to charge people, including the pregnant person – the pregnant mother – at any stage of gestation,” says lawyer Ellie Schilling.
The bill has passed committee on a 7-2 vote and now goes to the legislature to consider. We need to make our voices heard and make sure that women are not treated as murderers for making difficult healthcare choices!
Demand the Louisiana legislature vote down the barbaric bill to make abortion a homicide!

Call on Congress to ban police from using phone data to spy on pregnant people!

Healthcare
Target: United States Congress
As if the all-but-certain overturning of Roe v. Wade and the revocation of a woman’s right to make decisions for her own body weren’t dystopian enough, we are now faced with the deeply disturbing prospect of people’s own data being used to punish them for making their own reproductive choices.
If having an abortion becomes a felony in the majority of American states, law enforcement will suddenly become very interested in keeping track of who is pregnant. A Vice News investigation has already discovered a data broker, SafeGraph, selling information on people who have visited Planned Parenthood branches throughout the country.
Tell our lawmakers to protect the privacy of pregnant people and keep police out of their personal business!
Data harvesting on smartphone apps already makes deeply personal information all-too accessible. A Christian Substack newsletter called The Pillar recently used phone data to track and then publicly out a priest for being gay, without his consent, of course.
If states pass laws criminalizing traveling out of state to get medical care, women will find themselves returning home to face felony charges.
As if an unwanted pregnancy wasn’t terrifying enough already, now women must live in fear that everything from their very physical whereabouts to their period cycles could be weaponized against them as tech companies buy and sell our data for huge profits.
Call on Congress to ban police from using phone data to spy on pregnant people!

Demand Congress pass a law protecting abortion access — no matter what the Supreme Court says!

Healthcare
Target: United States Congress
In a stunning turn of events, a draft decision from Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito leaked to the media. It revealed that the conservative-dominated Supreme Court is prepared to gut the long-established precedent of Roe V. Wade and usher in a new era of darkness and repression for millions of women across America.
If that happens, the only thing that can protect a woman’s right to agency over her own body is Congressional legislation codifying Roe V. Wade into federal law.
Demand Congress do whatever it takes to protect women’s reproductive rights!
Words cannot describe how devastating the repeal of Roe V. Wade would be for American women. Lives will be put at risk as pregnant people inevitably turn to dangerous back-alley abortions in order to make their own health choices.
Given the shocking extremism exhibited by Republican legislators across the country these days, it is a certainty that women losing the fundamental right to have agency over their own bodies will open the door for the loss of all their other rights and freedoms too.
We cannot allow the GOP to turn back the clock and turn our great nation into their own perverted theocratic dystopia.
Call on Congress to pass a law protecting abortion access, no matter what the Supreme Court says!
