It’s been just over a year since a violent mob, encouraged by then-President Donald Trump, attempted to stop the peaceful transition of power to a democratically elected president by storming the US Capitol. Since that day, the threat to democracy has only grown. Trump’s Big Lie that the election was stolen from him has fueled a dramatic increase in legislation across the country designed to suppress the vote and hand over election controls to partisan operatives.

Thirty-three new laws in 19 different states were enacted last year alone, making it harder for people – particularly people of color – to vote. The House of Representatives has already passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act to undo the damage and protect all Americans’ voting rights. Still, it is up to the Senate to pass legislation and get it to President Biden’s desk — which is impossible as long as the filibuster gives the minority party veto power.

The filibuster isn’t in the Constitution. In fact, the filibuster historically has been used to deny people their constitutional rights. None of those rights are more sacred than the right to vote, and it is time to stop this archaic procedural mechanism from standing in the way of what is right.
