For the Winder community, tragedy struck on September 4th. Four people were killed and at least nine were injured when a 14-year-old shooter opened fire.
The academic year has just started, and four people who woke up to go to school or work that day will never return home.
The Winder community, like many before, has been traumatized. While law enforcement responded at Apalachee High School, every school in the district went into lockdown. Every student, every parent, and every teacher across the county feared for their own life or for their loved ones.
Back-to-school season should be for learning and growing. But right now, going to school means living under the threat of gun violence. In the United States, more than cancer, more than car accidents, guns are the leading cause of death for children and teens.
We will not sit by while our children continue to fall victim to gun violence. We will push forward common-sense gun safety legislation at every level of government. Please, join us as we call on Congress to ban assault weapons.
We continue to grieve with the families of Apalachee community members whose lives were taken or forever changed. And we are more committed than ever to creating a world where families can go about their daily lives free from the fear of gun violence.
