Tell Congress to end legacy enrollments at taxpayer-subsidized Ivy League schools!

Target: United States Congress

Harvard, Yale, Princeton… The eight schools in the Ivy League are among the most exclusive centers for higher education in the world. But if your parents didn’t go there first, your chances of getting admitted are very low. That’s because the Ivy League prioritizes accepting “legacy” students (a.k.a. children of wealthy alumni) to keep their bank accounts full and their campuses elite.

And, Ivy League schools are non-profits, meaning their tax obligations range from low to none. Here’s the problem: we’re all paying the tax dollars that subsidize an exclusionary system most of us aren’t allowed to enter.

Demand Members of Congress END legacy enrollment at taxpayer-subsidized Ivy League schools!

Harvard, for example, accepts one-third of legacy applicants, even though the overall acceptance rate is only 5%. But Harvard receives $188,506 per student in federal subsidies…while nearby University of Massachusetts receives only $23,590 per student to serve a much broader pool of middle- and lower-income students.

Quality higher education for all is extremely important! But a 1-percenter-club, legacy-driven admissions system should NOT be underwritten with public dollars. If the Ivy League wants our tax-dollars to keep them tax-free, it’s time for Congress to end discriminatory legacy admissions…
