The House has passed a bill that would ban the TikTok social media platform unless it divests itself from its Chinese ownership, which it’s unclear if it will be able to do. TikTok is one of the most popular social media apps in the world, and there are 150 million American users on the app. That's nearly half of the American population!
While lawmakers from both parties say that they’re concerned about the effect the app has on its users and offer up extremely nebulous national security concerns about China, the intelligence community has admitted that these threats are purely hypothetical and there is no evidence that the company has ever coordinated with Beijing.
They also conveniently ignore the fact that 60% of TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is owned by international investors, and another 20% of equity is owned by the employees themselves — and that TikTok helped add $24.2 billion to the US GDP in 2023, including $14.7 billion to the small business that politicians love to talk about come election time.
Stop the TikTok ban!
Though the general perception is that TikTok is just a platform for Gen Z, Pew Research Center data shows that every generation uses TikTok! If the ban is allowed to stay in place, it will set an alarming precedent and muzzle free speech for 150 million Americans.
An appellate court has upheld the law, prompting ByteDance to file an emergency stay. Unless Congress repeals the law, the ban will go into effect on January 19th. Time is running out!
Tell Congress to repeal the TikTok ban!
