In yet another deeply disturbing cabinet appointment, Donald Trump has tapped celebrity doctor and failed Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz to be in charge of Medicaid and Medicare.
Dr. Oz has a well-documented history of pushing snake oil cures and pseudoscientific conspiracy theories, hawking supplements like “green coffee bean extract” for weight loss and telling people that the mineral selenium would protect them from cancer. A 2017 paper published by the American Medical Association’s Journal of Ethics called him “a dangerous rogue unfit for the office of America’s doctor.”
Reject Dr. Oz’s nomination and keep him out of government!
But all that pales in comparison to what he plans to do to Medicaid and Medicare — which is turn it into a for-profit enterprise, exploiting and extorting our seniors and poor kids so that he and his rich cronies can get even richer — because, of course, many of Dr. Oz’s businesses stand to profit from Medicare privatization.
"Dr. Oz—a massive investor in Pharma—told the voters of Pennsylvania his plans to privatize Medicare… and they rejected him. Now Trump is giving him the authority to see his industry-approved plan carried through," writes progressive outlet The Lever.
The privatized Medicare plans that already exist, called Medicare Advantage, are notorious for denying beneficiaries their access to services, denying payments to providers, and ultimately failing to do what they are intended to do, which is provide healthcare. However, they are VERY successful at putting money in the pockets of the rich.
We cannot allow Dr. Oz to turn our public healthcare system into a multi-billion dollar giveaway to big corporations and the super-rich. Demand the Senate reject Dr. Oz’s nomination to run Medicare and Medicaid!
Don't put Dr. Oz in charge of Medicare & Medicaid!
