The ashes of Roe aren't even cold yet, and South Carolina Republicans are already chomping at the bit to pass further legislation restricting the basic rights of their pregnant citizens. With almost no media coverage, the South Carolina Senate has introduced a bill, S 1373, that would ban all travel out of state for abortion care, would punish a driver for taking a pregnant woman out of state for abortion care, and heaps further penalties on any doctor who would perform said healthcare.
While it is unclear whether restricting interstate travel is constitutional (unlikely) or how any of this could possibly be enforced, it is a terrifying escalation of the GOP's war on women and a grim harbinger of things to come.
One can only imagine that the full power of the American police surveillance state being brought to bear against pregnant people — likely with the cooperation of the tech companies who monitor and monetize our online behavior — and it paints the image of an American dystopia once only thought possible in edgy science fiction. But it's well on the way to becoming reality.
Demand the South Carolina Senate reject a bill that would ban women from traveling out of state for abortions!
